Brahms’s German Requiem, witten as a tribute to his mother, and designed to comfort the grieving, has touched many people’s lives since it was composed in 1868. In terms of both length and musical content, Ein Deutches Requiem is Brahms’s largest single work. Deeply moving, profound and powerful, its status as one of the greatest monuments of choral music – especially among its nineteenth-century peers – is unchallenged. Although originally written for choir, soloists and large orchestral forces, Collegium Musicum of London will present an exciting new version; the orchestral parts have been rearranged for chamber ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, ‘cello and piano, though the choral and solo parts remain untouched. Arranger Iain Farrington has enjoyed an exceptionally busy and diverse career as a pianist, organist, composer and arranger, has made numerous recordings, and has broadcast on BBC Television, Classic FM and BBC Radio 3. The concert will also feature Brahms’s hauntingly beautiful Geistliches Lied, opus 30, in another new arrangement by Iain Farrington, alongside the composer’s Piano Trio in B Major opus 8. London’s liveliest chamber choir will present a poignant and uplifting night of music-making. A unique opportunity to hear a sensitively re-worked interpretation of a timeless choral classic, in an unforgettable evening of choral and chamber music.
