A cappella choral revelations. CML’s annual short, drive-time concert in Clerkenwell.

3 March, 6.30pm
Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer
Clerkenwell

This year, Collegium Musicum of London’s spring, drive-time concert brings together a collection of inspiring acapella choral favourites from five centuries.

Certain music – especially when set to words – can propel an audience into a state of trance-like devotion or national pride, and even impel the listener to perform acts of remarkable bravery.

Such was the overwhelming effect on audiences of Allegri’s famous Miserere, composed in 1514, that the authorities in Rome banned it from being performed outside the Vatican. It wasn’t until a young Mozart transcribed the piece from memory in 1770 that the piece become more widely known, and took its place in the choral repertoire as a work of unsurpassed beauty, moving audiences with its deceptive simplicity.

In a programme containing equally persuasive works by composers as diverse as Purcell, Holst, Poulenc and Whitacre – as well as a few popular surprises – INSPIRE aims to banish the midweek blues with exhilarating, accessible music in a great venue in the very heart of Clerkenwell’s lively Emouth Market. And with a free glass of wine thrown in, you’re sure to leave with a spring in your step!
