Voices of Vienna
Saturday, 1st December 7.30 pm St James’s Church Piccadilly London, W1J 9LL Join Collegium Musicum of London Chamber Choir on its 40th anniversary for an intimate evening of choral music from three of Vienna’s most celebrated composers. Mozart, Schubert and Brahms encapsulate Viennese music of the 18th and 19th centuries – melodious, elegant, witty and wistful by turn, and above all infused with classical poise. The programme will include Mozart’s Missa Brevis in D, a fine example of a composer writing with both elegance and economy, and accompanied by the distinctive Viennese church string trio. Born in Vienna, Schubert's short life brought forth a stream of unforgettable melody and romantic expression. His Auf dem Strom, D943 – for tenor solo, piano and horn – was written in 1828, and composed for a concert commemorating the first anniversary of Beethoven’s death. The same year also saw Schubert's own death at the age of only 31. The programme also includes a collection of partsongs by Schubert and Brahms, completing the Viennese journey from Classical to late Romantic, in the company of one of London's liveliest chamber choirs.
